It’s the Memorial Day long weekend in the U S of A, so the big numbers will be in the four day totals. However, for our purposes, the early Friday-Saturday numbers are out and show Fast & Furious 6 as the big winner of the weekend. Here’s what went down:

The sixth instalment in the now venerable Fast & Furious franchise had a simply stellar debut weekend, bringing in $98 million (as predicted), the biggest opening in the series history. Not only did the flick appeal to longtime fans, but the trailers definitely helped bring in a new audience as well. With Fast & Furious 7 already in the works, the franchise is in it for the long haul and has the numbers to show for it.

Find out how the rest of the weekend turned out after the jump:

The Hangover Part III is certainly nursing a bad hangover this weekend, as it debut in second with a lacklustre $43.5 million, not even close to the second film’s $85 million. Bad reviews and audience ennui were a contributing factor, and I’m guessing that this one won’t come close to hitting $200 million.

Epic debut in third place with a solid $34 million, filling a family gap for audiences. This one has a strong shot at grossing over $100 million.

As for the rest of the top five, Star Trek Into Darkness fell to third place with $38 million, a drop of only 45% from it’s opening weekend. While the sequel is trailing the original, it’s still on track to make more than $200 million in North America. Meanwhile, Iron Man 3 closed things out in fifth with $20 million, bringing it’s total to $368 million n North America. It should cross the $400 million mark within the next month.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Fast & Furious 6 – $98 million
2) The Hangover Part III – $59 million
3) Star Trek Into Darkness – $40 million
4) Iron Man 3 – $30 million
5) Epic – $25 million

And here’s how the weekend turned out:

2) The Hangover Part III – $43.5 million

4) Epic – $34 million
